THE ACTIVE VALUE

In my reticence to curate I have drawn a certain line in the sand, yet my eye and mind remain active. There are many artists I would like to write about but only in a ruminative manner. Not even necessarily in a mode that they might find useful. All the same, to have ones work be the jumping off point for any serious discussion about the art of our time is still valuable. Critical perspectives on art and curatorial conceits share a dynamic engagement with art as an idea—an idea that is subsequently transformed into an ideal. What each artist produces continuously evolves its own mode of creative vision as well as our use for it. In this they are no different from artists of the past. What is the idea represented by the oeuvre of a specific artist? If s/he is great, one may easily assume the possession or presence of many ideas. Yet a specific formal focus executed with passion and precision embodies an idea in itself. The title one gives to this idea is the name of the artist.
